SCOTTIE HAS A VERY STRICT BEDTIME.
UNFORTUNATELY, IT’S YOURS.
When Scottie decides it’s time for bed, he climbs in, settles down, and starts squeaking until his people join him.
If they don’t show up right away, the squeaks get louder. There is no snooze button. There is no appeals process.
Scottie is a 6-year-old Corgi and King Charles Spaniel mix, which means he came with short legs, a big heart, and the soul of a devoted kindergarten teacher. His family found him at the Charlestown Shelter. When staff brought him out to meet them, he flopped onto his back and requested a tummy rub. It was, by all accounts, a flawless interview.
They fell in love on the spot.
Today, Scottie holds two senior positions in the household. As Director of Bedtime Enforcement, he monitors the clock, sets the schedule, and personally escorts everyone to bed. Off duty, he conducts quality control from the back of the sofa, curled up on the cushions. He is allowed everywhere. He chose the best seat anyway.
His second role, Head of Mom Surveillance, is a full-time operation. Every move she makes is tracked and followed. Kitchen, hallway, laundry room. He’s not nosy. He’s thorough.
Scottie spent his first five years in a hoarding situation with 40 other dogs, so he’s earned his opinions. Other dogs are not his crowd.
Toys never made it onto his radar either. His family has bought plenty, and he ignores every one of them with impressive consistency.
Rain is also on the list. He has reviewed the rain and does not recommend it.
What he does recommend: naps, cuddles, and having Mom and Dad home. When they walk back through the door after he’s been alone for a bit, he breaks into a full happy dance, as if they’ve returned from a long voyage at sea instead of a quick errand.
Strangers might see a sweet little dog on a sofa. His family sees a dog who gives them every ounce of his devotion and trust. He makes them laugh. He keeps them young. Living with Scottie, they say, means everything.
He’d like to add one thing: bedtime is at the usual time. Don’t make him squeak twice.
